What Is Low Sperm Count?

low sperm count

Low sperm count is a condition in which the number of sperm in semen is less than 15 million sperm per milliliter. This reduces the chances of conception after intercourse, but some men with a low sperm count can still father children.

Causes of low sperm count

Common causes include:

  • Varicocele: It leads to an increase in temperature, which affects sperm production.
  • Bacterial infections: such as syphilis, gonorrhea, rubella, or prostatitis.
  • Retrograde ejaculation: such as in cases of diabetes or spinal cord injuries.
  • Hormonal disorders: deficiency of testosterone or LH and FSH.
  • Chromosomal disorders: such as genetic defects.
  • Other factors: cancer, blocked sperm ducts, certain medications, exposure to chemicals, or excessive heat.

Risk factors

Some bad habits may increase the risk of decreased fertility, such as:

  • drinking alcohol in excess
  • Drug and stimulant abuse
  • Smoking
  • psychological stress
  • vitamin deficiency
  • morbid obesity

Symptoms of low sperm count

The main symptom is difficulty in conceiving, and additional symptoms may appear, such as:
